What I Walked Into

August is one of those times in Arizona when homeowners around Glendale & The West Valley start noticing more pest activity around patios, garages, block walls, and side yards. Scorpions are one of the calls that usually get people’s attention fast.

A few weeks ago, I visited a home in Glendale after the homeowner found a scorpion inside near the laundry area. That single sighting immediately raised concern because once a scorpion makes its way indoors, most people start wondering if there are more nearby.

When I arrived, the homeowner showed me the side yard first. There were decorative rocks, a block wall, a few shaded corners, and some outdoor storage along the fence line. The patio area also had a few quiet hiding spots that stayed cooler than the rest of the yard.

Inside the home, the concern was mainly around entry points near the laundry room and garage access area. The family had only seen one scorpion, but that was enough to make them uncomfortable.

The Problem

The biggest issue with scorpions is that they usually do not appear for no reason.

In this case, the property had a few conditions that could support scorpion activity:

block wall gaps and protected edges

shaded rock landscaping

quiet storage areas

patio corners with limited disturbance

insect activity around exterior lighting

small access points near the home

For many homes in Glendale & The West Valley, these are the kinds of conditions that can create shelter and make it easier for scorpions to stay close to the structure.

The Process

I started by inspecting the full exterior perimeter because that is often where the real story begins with scorpion activity.

I checked:

the block wall line

decorative rock beds

shaded corners around the patio

garage edges

storage areas

door thresholds and exterior gaps

likely insect activity zones

After that, I moved indoors and checked the areas closest to the reported sighting. Since scorpions usually come inside through access points rather than appearing out of nowhere, I wanted to understand both the exterior conditions and the likely entry areas.

Once I had a better picture of the conditions, I explained to the homeowner that the goal was not just reacting to the sighting, but also reducing the things around the property that could keep drawing scorpions closer.

The Outcome

After the inspection, the homeowner felt much more at ease because they understood what may have contributed to the problem.

We discussed practical prevention steps, likely harborage areas, and what changes could help reduce future scorpion pressure. That gave them a much clearer plan instead of just hoping the issue would not happen again.

Sometimes the biggest value for a homeowner is not only addressing the immediate concern, but also understanding why the pest showed up in the first place.

DIY Advice I Shared

Here are a few simple scorpion prevention tips I shared with the homeowner:

reduce clutter around patios and side yards

keep storage items organized and off the ground when possible

trim plants away from the home and block wall

watch for insect activity around exterior lighting

seal small gaps around doors and entry points

keep garage edges and thresholds clean

inspect shaded rock areas and quiet corners regularly

Small changes can help a lot, especially when they are combined with professional pest control service.

Professional Insight

One thing I have learned over the years is that scorpions are often more about property conditions than people realize.

If a home has shelter, access, and nearby insect activity, scorpions may stay active around the structure even if the homeowner keeps the inside of the home clean.

That is why inspection matters. You are not just looking for the pest. You are looking for the conditions that help it stay around.

Closing Thoughts

If you live in Glendale & The West Valley and you have seen a scorpion around your home, it is worth paying attention early.

A single sighting does not always mean a major issue, but it is still a good reason to inspect the property, reduce hiding spots, and make sure the right prevention steps are in place.

If you need help figuring out why scorpions are showing up around your property, Deal Pest Control is here to help.
